Peptocid 200 ml is a multi-purpose anti-dyspeptic and carminative solution designed to relieve symptoms like upset stomach, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, and diarrhea. It contains bismuth subsalicylate, which provides a protective coating in the stomach, aiding in fluid and electrolyte absorption, reducing intestinal inflammation, and binding toxins produced by harmful bacteria.
- Adults: 30 ml, 3-4 times daily, 30 minutes before meals.
- Children (3-12 years): 5-15 ml depending on age.
- Repeat doses may be taken every 30 minutes to 1 hour, but no more than 8 doses in 24 hours.
- Elderly & Renal Insufficiency: Caution is advised.
Overdose may cause symptoms of bismuth or salicylate intoxication, including confusion, tremors, nausea, dizziness, and renal dysfunction. Treatment involves gastric lavage, hydration, and potentially chelation therapy.
Peptocid 200 ml creates a protective coating for the esophagus and stomach lining. It exerts an anti-diarrheal effect by encouraging the absorption of fluids and electrolytes in the intestines and inhibits prostaglandins responsible for inflammation. Additionally, it binds and neutralizes toxins from harmful bacteria like E. coli, and fights H. pylori infection in the gastrointestinal tract.
Antacid Action: Bismuth Subsalicylate coats ulcer surfaces, protecting them from acid and pepsin. It stimulates the secretion of mucus and bicarbonate and reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to produce bismuth oxychloride and salicylic acid, thus reducing stomach acidity.
Anti-Diarrheal Action: Peptocid encourages the absorption of water and electrolytes across the intestinal wall. It also binds to toxins produced by E. coli and disrupts H. pylori cells, preventing their adhesion to the intestinal wall.
Anti-Inflammatory Action: Once hydrolyzed to salicylic acid, Peptocid inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which reduces inflammation and coats irritated tissue, helping to prevent fluid expulsion.
Peptocid overdose may present with symptoms like confusion, tremors, gastrointestinal disturbances, and renal dysfunction. Overdose can also cause salicylate intoxication, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, and headache. Treatment includes gastric lavage, hydration, and in severe cases, chelation or hemodialysis.
Adults (over 16): 30 ml using the provided dosing cup or 6 teaspoons.
- Children (10-14 years): 15 ml (3 teaspoons).
- Children (5-9 years): 7.5 ml (1.5 teaspoons).
- Children (3-4 years): 5 ml (1 teaspoon).
- Children under 3 years: Consult a doctor.
Elderly: No special precautions needed.
Renal insufficiency: Use with caution.
Repeat doses can be taken every 30 minutes to 1 hour if needed, but no more than 8 doses should be taken within 24 hours.
Since Peptocid contains salicylates, it should be used cautiously in patients taking:
Pregnancy Category C: There are insufficient studies in humans to determine the safety of Bismuth Subsalicylate during pregnancy. It should only be used during pregnancy or lactation if necessary.
Store at temperatures below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
